QUESTIONS TO ASK AN AUDIOLOGIST


If you approach an Audiologist for a hearing evaluation, he/she will get involved in a conversation about your health history, do a physical examination of your inner and outer ear structures, and also do a series of tests to confirm the presence of hearing loss and to see the degree of loss. Once the testing is done, the Audiologist will explain to you the test results. That time is also an opportunity for you to ask questions to the Audiologist.

Below are a few questions that you can ask your Audiologist while you get a hearing evaluation done

  1. What type of loss do I have? Will it be worse or better?

The hearing loss can be conductive, sensorineural, or mixed. Conductive is when the sound transmission is affected. Sensorineural is when the system is affected and mixed is a combination of both. Conductive loss can become better if treated with medicines. In most cases, however, a sensorineural loss may either remain the same or be worse with time. Mixed loss progression depends on the conductive component in it.

  1. Do both ears have the same hearing loss?

The left and right ears tend to hear differently. The left ear is better at receiving information from music, emotion, and intuition while the right ear is better for speech and logic. This is the reason why people with hearing loss find it difficult to understand moods and emotions if their left ear is affected and complain of difficulty in understanding speech when the right ear is affected more. Usually, the hearing loss is symmetrical. Unilateral losses can be seen in case of sudden sensorineural loss, in case of a tumor affecting the hearing nerve, etc.

  1. Do I need a hearing aid for both ears?

It depends on your hearing loss and its severity. If you do require a hearing aid for both ears, it will be easier for the brain to interpret sounds while using two hearing aids instead of one. In most cases, people will need a hearing aid for both ears.

  1. Will there be any additional costs after the hearing aid purchase?

It purely depends on the clinic. Generally, follow-up care is included in the purchase price. Some centers even include the price of adjustments, repairs, batteries, and check-ups while other centers do not. Hence, it is essential to ask the Audiologist about the same.

  1. How often is checking or adjustment required for the hearing aid?

It takes about a few adjustments to make it extremely beneficial. Hence, a few follow-up visits may be required. Once you are fully adjusted with the hearing aids, you may not have to come for regular tuning. However, it is advisable to get the hearing and hearing aid checked every six months.

  1. How long will the hearing aid last?

Like any electronic device, hearing aids will also come to an end. Although it is user-dependent on when the aid would last, usually hearing aid comes with two years of warranty. With good care and maintenance, a hearing aid can work for quite a long.

  1. What happens if I am not satisfied with the purchased hearing aids?


    Many centers will offer a trial before purchasing the hearing aid. You can request a trial before purchasing one. Once the payment is done, it is usually not taken back. However, the Audiologist can fine-tune your hearing aid for a better experience.
